Key findings

  • College Board reports that 691 students in the class of 2026 scored 1600, which works out to about 1 in 2,829 test takers. See figure
  • The report counts each student once and uses their most recent SAT score, not their best one. See figure
  • 167,152 students in the class of 2026 scored in the 1400 to 1600 band, about 1 in 11.7 test takers. See figure
  • The 1400 to 1600 group grew from 142,239 in the class of 2024 to 167,152 in the class of 2026, an increase of 24,913 students. See figure
  • College Board does not publish a count of students scoring 1500 or higher, or of exact 800s on either section. See figure

The 1600 count and what "most recent score" means

On the score distribution page of its 2026 Total Group report, College Board lists 691 students scoring 1600, shown as 0.04% of the class of 2026 (College Board). With 1,954,833 test takers, that is about 1 in 2,829. Even among the 167,152 students who scored in the top band, the 691 perfect scores make up only 0.41%.

The definition matters. The report says:

"If a student took the SAT more than once, the most recent score is summarized."

So this is not a count of everyone who ever hit 1600. A student who scored 1600 and then retook the test and scored lower would not be in the 691. Superscores are not used either. Each student is counted once, and the group is students who graduated high school in 2026 and took the SAT at some point in high school, not everyone who tested in a given calendar year.

The 2024 and 2025 Total Group reports did not include a separate 1600 count. They showed only the 1400 to 1600 band. College Board's class of 2026 press release also leaves the 691 out, so the figure appears only in the report PDF.

Class of 2026 total score bands

Most students land in the middle of the scale. The two bands from 800 to 1190 hold more than half of the class, while 167,152 students (9%) scored 1400 or higher (College Board). The mean total score was 1045, and the middle half of students scored between 870 and 1220. The full breakdown is in the table below. If you want to see where a specific score falls, try Is my SAT score good? or read the average SAT score for more on the 1045 mean.

Reading and Writing and Math section bands

Each section is scored on its own scale with a top band of 700 to 800. In the class of 2026, 177,377 students scored 700 to 800 in Reading and Writing and 216,744 students did so in Math (College Board). The mean section scores were 528 in Reading and Writing and 517 in Math.

The report prints these counts as two stacked bars per band. We matched each bar to its section by checking that each set of counts adds to 1,954,833 and that the implied averages line up with the published means of 528 and 517. The table below shows the full breakdown.

Scores of 1400 and up, class of 2024 to class of 2026

The number of students in the 1400 to 1600 band has risen for two straight classes, according to College Board annual reports:

That is 17,385 more students in the top band than the year before, even though fewer students took the test in 2026 than in 2025. Keep in mind that these are band counts, and the report does not say how the 1600 count itself changed.

What the data can and cannot tell you

College Board publishes total and section scores in bands rather than exact scores. The only exact score it reports a count for is 1600.

  • No official count of 1500 or higher. Those students sit inside the 1400 to 1600 band with everyone else, and College Board does not split that band.
  • No count of exact 800s. The report gives the 700 to 800 band for each section, not perfect section scores.
  • No best-score or superscore count. Every figure uses the most recent score.

Any number you see elsewhere for 1500 plus scorers or perfect section scores is an estimate, not an official count. For a sense of where a score ranks, see what counts as a good SAT score, or use the SAT score calculator to turn practice test results into a scaled score.

Estimates that circulate online, such as "roughly 300 to 500 students" a year (Climb the Ladder), are below College Board's official class of 2026 count of 691.

Methodology and limitations

Every class of 2026 figure comes from the College Board 2026 SAT Suite of Assessments Annual Report: Total Group. Earlier years come from the 2025 and 2024 Total Group reports, and the class of 2026 mean scores were cross-checked against the College Board press release. We read each figure from the report PDFs twice, using two separate text extraction methods, and kept a figure only when both reads agreed. In every year, the six total score bands add up exactly to the number of test takers.

Computed figures: the "1 in" ratios divide test takers by the number of students in the group. Shares of the 1400 to 1600 band divide the band count by that year's test takers. The year-over-year change is the newer band count minus the older one. The 1600 share of the top band divides the 1600 count by the 1400 to 1600 count.

Limitations: all counts use each student's most recent SAT score, so a student who once scored higher may be counted at a lower score. College Board reports no exact counts other than 1600, so this page gives no figures for 1500 plus scores or perfect section scores.

College Board releases its Total Group SAT annual report each fall, usually in late September, and this page will be rechecked and updated when the class of 2027 report is published.
