What to ask before you pay

A price only means something once you know what it buys. These questions turn two quotes into something you can actually compare.

  • Who will actually tutor my student? With a company, the person on the sales call isn't always the tutor. Ask to meet the tutor before you commit.
  • How many hours are included, and how long is each session? A package priced by "sessions" can hide short sessions. Convert everything to hours, which is what the calculator does.
  • What happens if we miss a session or stop early? Ask about rescheduling and refunds in writing.
  • Do you use the official practice tests? College Board's full-length practice tests in Bluebook are free, so a tutor should be able to explain what they add on top of them.
  • How will we know it's working? A clear answer names a practice test schedule and what gets reviewed after each one.

What published price guides report

There's no neutral national survey of SAT tutoring prices that we could find. The most detailed public numbers come from tutoring companies themselves, so read them as each company's view of the market, not as an average. Both publishers below sell SAT tutoring.

Hourly SAT tutoring rates as published by two tutoring companies. Checked October 7, 2026.
Tutor levelPrivate Prep (updated Aug 17, 2026)IvyStrides (June 25, 2026)
Entry level$45 to $75$45 to $80
Experienced or professional$75 to $125$80 to $200
Company-certified$125 to $300+not listed
Elite or section specialist$200 to $500+$150 to $500+

Private Prep says most families spend $1,500 to $6,000+ for 20 to 30 hours of prep, and IvyStrides lists group prep classes at $300 to $1,500 total. Use these ranges to sanity-check a quote, then put your actual quotes into the calculator above.

How it works

  1. Enter how many weeks you have until the test. Every option uses the same number.
  2. For an hourly quote, enter the rate and hours per week. Total = rate × hours per week × weeks, plus any other costs.
  3. For a package, enter the price and the hours it includes. Total = price plus other costs. Cost per hour = price ÷ hours, and the calculator shows how many hours a week you'd need to use the package before the test.
  4. With two or more options, it labels the lowest cost per hour and the lowest total in words, so the comparison doesn't depend on color.

Worked example (example numbers, not quotes). Over 10 weeks, Option A is $60 an hour for 2 hours a week: 60 × 2 × 10 = $1,200 for 20 hours, or $60.00 an hour. Option B is a $1,995 package for 10 hours: $199.50 an hour, which works out to 1 hour a week. Option A costs less in total and per hour, and it also gives twice the hours.

Things to know

  • Prices vary a lot by tutor, format and location, so this calculator only uses the numbers you enter. We don't set or endorse any price.
  • Free official prep exists: Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy is free, and College Board's Bluebook has free full-length practice tests. Schoolhouse.world runs a free SAT Bootcamp in partnership with College Board. See whether SAT practice raises scores for the research.
  • More hours aren't automatically better. What matters is what happens in them, which is why the questions above matter as much as the math.

Questions people ask

How much does a good SAT tutor cost?

There isn't a neutral published average. Tutoring companies' own published guides (checked October 7, 2026) put entry-level tutors around $45 to $80 an hour and specialists at $150 to $500 or more (Private Prep, IvyStrides). Convert every quote to cost per hour and total hours, which is what this calculator does, and ask what each hour includes.

Is SAT tutoring worth it?

It depends on whether the student needs structure and accountability or just practice material, since the official material is free. Our guide Is SAT Tutoring Worth It? walks through a five-point checklist.

Is there free SAT tutoring or prep?

Yes. Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy is free (College Board), Bluebook has free full-length practice tests (College Board), and Schoolhouse.world runs a free SAT Bootcamp with College Board (Schoolhouse.world). See all the free SAT tutoring and prep options.

Is a package or an hourly rate better?

Neither is better by default. A package can lower the hourly cost but locks you into hours you have to use before test day. Compare the cost per hour and check that the weekly hours the package needs actually fit your schedule.

The SAT tutoring cost calculator on TutoringForSat.com was built by Cedrick Reese. It does plain arithmetic on the quotes you enter and stores nothing. The calculator has no built-in or "average" prices, because no neutral source gives a reliable national figure. The price ranges shown on the page come from two tutoring companies' own published guides, checked on October 7, 2026 and labeled as theirs. The free-prep options mentioned on this page were checked on College Board and Schoolhouse.world pages on October 7, 2026 and are rechecked each testing year. This page has no affiliate links.
