How the National Merit program works
The PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, run by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Here's the path for students taking the test in fall 2026, from the program section of College Board's PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide:
- Enter by testing. About 1.3 million of the more than 3 million students who take the PSAT/NMSQT meet the entry requirements.
- High scorers. About 50,000 are recognized in spring 2027 based on their Selection Index.
- Commended and Semifinalist. In September 2027 (senior year), about 34,000 are named Commended Students and about 16,000 are named Semifinalists. Semifinalist cutoffs are set state by state.
- Finalist. About 15,000 Semifinalists become Finalists by February 2028. One requirement is SAT or ACT scores that confirm the PSAT/NMSQT performance.
- Scholarships. Some 6,700 National Merit Scholarships and about 620 Special Scholarships are expected to be awarded in 2028.
For exact counts from the most recent completed program, including Semifinalist rates by state and the colleges that enroll the most Scholars, see National Merit statistics.
Fall 2026 PSAT/NMSQT test dates
Schools give the PSAT/NMSQT between October 1 and October 30, 2026, and for 2026 only they may also test on Saturday, October 17 (College Board). Your school picks the date, so ask your counselor which day it's on. College Board's 2026-27 dates flyer lists student score release about two weeks after testing: October 22 for an October 9 test, November 5 for October 23, and November 12 for October 30 (College Board).
What your PSAT score means for the SAT
The whole SAT Suite uses a common score scale, so your PSAT/NMSQT score is the SAT score you'd be expected to earn if you took the SAT that same day (College Board). The PSAT tops out at 1520 instead of 1600. The PSAT to SAT conversion shows the equivalent and where it ranks among SAT takers.

For the program ending in 2028, a student must be enrolled in high school and on track to finish by 2028, attend high school in the U.S., D.C. or a U.S. commonwealth or territory (or meet citizenship requirements if studying abroad), and take the 2026 PSAT/NMSQT in the specified year, no later than the third year of grades 9 through 12 (PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide).
How many students become National Merit Semifinalists?
About 16,000. Of roughly 1.3 million entrants, about 50,000 high scorers are recognized: about 34,000 Commended Students and about 16,000 Semifinalists (PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide). In the 2024 program the exact count was 16,579, or 1.27% of entrants (National Merit statistics).
When are Semifinalists announced?

This PSAT and National Merit guide on TutoringForSat.com was written by Cedrick Reese. Program rules, numbers and timing come from the NMSC section of College Board's fall 2026 PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide, because the National Merit Scholarship Corporation's own site couldn't be read by our checking tools. The test dates come from College Board's PSAT/NMSQT dates page. All were checked on October 7, 2026. The guide is updated each September when new cutoffs come out, and again when the next year's Student Guide is published.
